How to remember last download location?

By default, this feature is enabled. If you need to turn it on manually, here's how:

  1. Open Options menu
  2. Navigate to General > New Task Defaults
  3. Select the checkbox for "Save file to last used location"

Important note about download location: The last used location must be within your browser's default downloads folder. For example:

  • Windows: Usually C:/Users/[YourUsername]/Downloads
  • Mac: /Users/[YourUsername]/Downloads

Otherwise, the file will automatically go to your browser's default downloads location instead. This is a browser security feature that prevents extensions from downloading files to unauthorized locations without user confirmation.

Customizing Fallback Behavior

If you prefer to choose a new location when the last used location isn't available:

  1. Open Options
  2. Navigate to General > Miscellaneous
  3. Under "When unable to save to the destination folder", select "Choose a new location using system dialog"

To change your browser's default download location:

  1. Open chrome://settings/downloads in your browser
  2. Set your preferred default downloads folder

Currently this is not possible due to Chrome's security policy, it's likely that malicious extensions may do bad things with that.

Can Chrono Download Manager resume a downlaod after it is suddenly stopped?

This isn't my answer but a slight expansion on the question. If I'm downloading the file and power is suddenly lost will CDM resume the download from where it was stopped or will it need to be redownlaoded entirely?

A new user needs directions on how to use this! Where are instructions? A FAQ is not a substitute for a help file or some type of downloadable manual, something? I can't find settings/options. This got so out of control I had to kill Chrome with Task Manager. I managed to guess a way to start a download job, but could not stop nor pause it. How about explaining how to start this and use it? The little popup are out of control by default. They cover everything on the edge of the screen, making it useless. I will be removing it until I get proper instructions to control this thing.

When I load say 500 URLS for chrono to download, it will go for a little while, then it will just stop. 10 urls will be queud to download (blue arrow) and the rest will have the clock symble. Progress is 0. If I delete those to queued, 10 more show up but still with 0 progress. I need a solution to download thousands of pages, an chrono looks like it is it. But this is a deal breaker. I've reset the entire program 4 times now. I am skipping already downloaded files and I have notifications turned off incase that was causing the problem. Help is appreciated.

I see where you can disable notification sounds, but is it possible to change them?

Search for finish.ogg on your computer.

Mine is located in C:\Users\####\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\#####################\0.9.3_0\snds

Replace it with your preferred sound file.

How to continue downloading after network fail? It just restarts download.

Yes, you have to use the original Chrome downloader.  You can get to it on the INCOGNITO window.

1. Ctrl+Shift+N   OR   Menu -> New incognito window

2. Ctrl+J   OR   Menu -> Downloads

3. Then find your failed/paused and click the giant blue RESUME button.

This should be a simple feature to add to the alternate download manager if it does not exist since you just have to link to the function, if it exists it just needs to be documented where it is and make the function more obvious and easy to access.

How do I add a custom date format (yyyymmdd instead of yyyy-mm-dd) to the beginning of the filename? Tried using "*date[,yyyyMMdd]**name*.*ext*" as the default naming mask, but the file saves as "_date[_test.jpg" instead.

Found an answer to my own question. Remove the braces. I.e. have "*date, yyyyMMdd**name*.*ext*" as the mask.

For my ancestry research, I want to create a local backup of the online sources (which are free and publicly available), like here: https://ebadatelna.soapraha.cz/d/6657/5 Using right click -> download image, or the sniffer, I can download any individual page. My issues start when I want to download more than one image at a time using the manager. 1. Through the sniffer I found the image URL, like this one: https://ebadatelna.soapraha.cz/wicket/resource/org.apache.wicket.Application/Kolesovice_01__001.jpg For the remaining pages, the number at the end increases to 002, 003 etc., I also validated this through the sniffer. 2. Using a spreadsheet, I created a list of all images I want to download from that particular souce. 3. When I copy+paste the list into the chrono download manager, it will only download the first image (if at all). From the second link onwards, all the links in the tasks will somehow auto change from a .jpg ending to a .htm ending. 4. Using the chrono download manager, it would only download the pages 001 or 002, if I tried downloading any other links, they would fail by default. Is there any fix to solve this? Again, using the sniffer, I can download any individual image without any issue. Or is it the website that somehow blocks the bulk download?

Why am I seeing dialog "Please click Cancel, this is Chrono testing download configuration..."?

If you see this "Save As" dialog when starting a download, it typically means your browser settings need to be adjusted. The following configurations are required for Chrono Download Manager to work smoothly:

  1. Choose a Safe Download Location Browser's default downloads location must be a regular non-system folder that Chrono Download Manager has permission to write to. For example, system folder like C:/ on Windows or /System on Mac OS would cause problems for Chrono.
  2. Disable Browser Download Prompts Configure your browser to download files automatically instead of asking where to save each file.

How to Configure Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome Settings by typing chrome://settings/downloads in your address bar
  2. Find the "Downloads" section
  3. Click "Change" to set your default download location to one of the recommended folders:
    1. Windows: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Downloads or create a folder like D:\Downloads
    2. Mac: /Users/[USERNAME]/Downloads
  4. Uncheck the box that says "Ask where to save each file before downloading"

2 popup when one click download is turned off

Hi,

If someone could help me with this slight annoying issue that I've found - when one click download is turned off (I need to change the name for certain download batches) - the popup to start and name the file pops up twice... one on the tab from the page itself and the other in a NEW tab (which is extremely annoying) where the download manager page opens.

Is there any setting where I can change this? I'd have to kill one and then change tab, which I'm pretty sure is not supposed to happen

Thanks in advance!

How to download only files from a specific webpage? When I use sniffer, it finds all files from the website I'm on. It's like if it searches a directory from the webpage where there is all the downloads available. Because all the files are randomly named with numbers, I can't select those I want without open them all first, which is insane when you have more than 20 downloadable files.

Not the easiest thing, but two ways to do what you want.

1. Bring up the sniffer.  Under the Image tab, click on the URL button.  This will SORT THE LIST BY URL. Click again to reverse the sort. Now scroll down find the first wanted entry (resize the column if necessary) and click the row (NOT the left checkbox, the ROW ITSELF.)  It'll change color.  Now scroll down to the last one, hit and hold SHIFT and click it's row.  The entire section (not the entire list though) will turn grey.  (Holding CTRL will select only those specific rows you clicked on.) NOW select any grey single option box on the left to enable that entire section.  The download count will reflect the number of rows you selected.  Click Start or Pause to go.

2.  Use the Regular Expression area, and sort per above if necessary.  Basically: ONLY USE LOWER CASE HERE, and prepend  EVERY non alphanumeric character with a backslash.  Example: pictures\.google\.com or 1080p\)  Either just do this or read up on RE rules.  Alphanums are resonable, but all other characters do NOT do what you expect.  If confused, always add a \ before the character.

This should automatically select all rows with those characters, the number of rows will reflect your search.  Click Start or Pause.

RE's are weird if you've not read up on them.  Preface any strange character with a backslash.  And for some reason only here, UPPER CASE breaks the search -- that's NOT an RE thing, I don't know what the deal is.

BTW:  I've currently got over 3,000 items in my DL list, adding them 10-60 at a time.   At 200K per file, it's taken days running 4 threads.  Working fine though, even survived a browser crash(!)

I have been trying to find a way to download over 10000 files. Unfortunately the limit of number of tasks is 10000 and it automatically registers only the first 9999 urls. How can I find the rest of the urls so I can add them afterwards ? I cannot split them beforehand... I sure hope you can help me because as of now there is no way of getting any files from urls Chrono sniffed beyond 10000. It sniffs them, but cant do anything with the last ones, cant even copy all those urls infront of me :( thank you very much in advance. Sorry for my english

Your English is just fine.  Ignore the losers who harp on typos and misphrasings -- EVERYONE does that.

I don't know the answer to your question, but (What on Earth are you downloading? :-) ) may I suggest that you save the HTML page and chop it up into 9,000 chunk items in your favorite HTML editor, then load each page seperately and specify things that-a-way.

Conversely you might try sorting, selecting chunks with SHIFT, and/or using the Regular Expression filters.

NOT the answer that you wanted, but that might get you limping along.  Alternatively, look at FireFox 56 (and below) and Down-Them-All for this.  Or look at WGET and feed it a list of URLs.  It'll eat ANYthing at all.

The Naming Mask input box is grayed out in batch/Sniffer mode?! -- When you right-click on a single image/file and use Chrono>save image as, you can edit Task Properties to change the Naming Mask for that file/download. -- However, if you use the Chrono Sniffer (from the bar button) for the whole page, there are two tabs at the bottom, one titled Quick Selection and the other Task Properties. Quick Selection works and allows you to select files to download, but when clicking on Task Properties, the box for Naming Mask is grayed out! I can't place the cursor in that box to create a naming mask for the downloads. This makes the batch download function useless. I'm not going to batch download a 100 files and then go back and individually rename them all. -- To clarify, yes I know (and have set) a universal default naming system as ., but I need to be able to add a name for each different batch/time I download files. When I do one at a time, Task Properties appears and you can edit the Naming Mask to be Bob_Smith--., but when using ChronoSniffer to download a batch/the whole page, this function is grayed out?!?

Nevermind. I figured it out. You have to click/highlight each file to make Naming Mask functional. This seems silly, I've already "checked" on each file I want to download, but now under Task Properties, I have to click on and highlight each file to use naming mask. Why?

What's more, there is no select all for this (unlike the check all box). You have to go through and shift click or arrow to highlight all the files (page up doesn't even work).

What's really to the point is there are no instructions manual for the extension that explains this. I read through the whole FAQ and this was not mentioned. It's not intuitive, if I've already "checked" the files to download, I also have to click/highlight to use naming mask for them.

Can I route downloads from specific sites to different folders?

Yes, you put forward slashes between the naming masks, for example your naming mask would look like so:

*date*/*host*/*name*.*ext*

So that would come out with the files placed into a folder for the current date, then a folder for the host site, then the filename and it's extention.

I find that's useful to keep new photos seperated from the older ones. But you may prefer to put the date inside the website folder ornot include it at all, totally up to you.

I've found downloading from different places the results using *host* isn;t always consitant, so if that doesn't give you your desired result you can also try

*page_title* or *refer* instead.

Although I've not foundeither of those to be 100% reliable either. Failing all of those, you can just add the site name in manually during download

like so google.com/*host*/*name*.*ext*

Hope that helps :)

I've worked out a lot of useful little tricks in this program that I've had to figure out for myself, so I might put a blog post together on my site at some point soon, as this FAQ is aweful and the top questions don't even read well, so think I need to do somethign about it lol.

None of my rules work - even the default ones that come pre-configured

So at the title states - all my rules don't work. I've ticked them all to be 'active' and none are working - even the pre-configured ones that come with the extension.

I've tested by adding "test_" as a prefix to the default naming mask, under the rules section and this does rename files to have "test_" at the start. It seems all files are doing this; pdf, jpg, mp3 etc. and not just my own rule for a specific file type. Is there something missing that I need to do?

How to properly write rules for filetype sorting! Chrono Download Manager (With Screenshots)

After tinkering around for over an hour, I coded a way to properly sort all file types, as the default rules in Chrono Download Manager do not work.

Examples for rules:

Condition
[ext_video].has(*ext*)
*ext*.is([ext_pdf])

Naming Mask
video/*name*.*ext*
pdf/*name*.ext

Notice I ditched the {r_done}&& because that was literally breaking the filtering. Also, although it doesn't matter as much as I thought, it was more logical to test if a long list of extensions in a string ".has" a certain extention inside of it. Thus you'll see ".has" used except for ext_pdf, because it's a single extension only, which I removed from ext_doc and made separate.

I'll attach screenshots of my setup so you can get this tool working properly. I haven't bothered to learn more about it for now since it's working.
